The United States President, Donald Trump, has been quoted as warning his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, against rejecting efforts for peace in the war between Ukraine and Russia.
Trump vowed that Putin would face a “rough situation” if he did not co-operate in the peace process, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy had to “show some flexibility,” The Guardian reports.
Ahead of a hoped-for meeting by the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, Trump told Fox News, “I hope President Putin is going to be good and if he’s not, that’s going to be a rough situation.
“And I hope that Zelensky, President Zelensky, will do what he has to do. He has to show some flexibility.”
According to Reuters, in an interview with the Fox News Fox & Friends programme, Trump said he expected that Putin's actions would become clear in the next couple of weeks.
"I don't think it's going to be a problem (reaching a peace deal), to be honest with you. I think Putin is tired of it. I think they're all tired of it, but you never know," Reuters quoted Trump as saying.
"We're going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks ... It's possible that he doesn't want to make a deal," said Trump, who has previously threatened more sanctions on Russia and nations that buy its oil if Putin does not make peace.
This statement comes after Trump's meeting with Putin on Friday. The duo had met in Alaska.
Earlier, Zelensky had accused Russia of continuing its killings amid negotiations aimed at ending the war between the two countries.
"On the day of negotiations, the Russians are killing as well. And that speaks volumes. Recently, weʼve discussed with the U.S. and Europeans what can truly work. Everyone needs a just end to the war. Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end, and we count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Make no mistake – strength," he posted.
Zelensky and European leaders also met Trump on Monday, August 18, after the U.S. President’s meeting with Putin, as efforts to ensure peace accelerate.
