HONG KONG — China’s first aircraft carrier constructed entirely within the country, the Shandong, arrived in Hong Kong waters this week, marking a powerful demonstration of Beijing’s expanding military capabilities and ambitions.
Accompanied by three domestically-built warships, Shandong began a five-day visit to the semi-autonomous territory on Thursday. Named after the eastern coastal province where it is based, the carrier was commissioned in 2019 and is the first Chinese warship fully designed and built at home. Its flight deck spans roughly the size of two soccer fields, and its height rivals a 20-story building.
With a displacement exceeding 60,000 tons, the Shandong can carry dozens of fighter jets and helicopters. China currently operates one of the world’s largest navies, with approximately 300,000 active personnel, according to a 2023 report linked to the Ministry of Veteran Affairs.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee called the visit “historic” and “inspiring” as the city marks the fifth anniversary of Beijing’s national security law, enacted amid a crackdown on pro-democracy protests. At the welcoming ceremony, Lee emphasized that the visit underscores the city’s “rock-solid” national security.
Colonel Zhang Junshe of the People’s Liberation Army Navy highlighted that the fleet’s presence sends a clear message internationally about China’s military achievements and combat readiness, which he said would deter those with “ulterior motives,” according to the state-backed Global Times.
The visit comes amid heightened international concerns over China’s territorial disputes, including its claims over Taiwan and maritime conflicts in the South China Sea involving the Philippines. Last week, U.S. Army Pacific Commander Gen. Ronald P. Clark warned that China’s military development is advancing at an unprecedented scale.
The Shandong’s public exhibition in Hong Kong, running through Monday, marks the first time the carrier has been open for public viewing.
