One person can start nuclear war.

Not a committee. Not Congress. Not “the system.” Just the one U.S. president.

Here’s how it actually works:

– The president carries a small card called the “biscuit” with authentication codes

– A military aide follows them everywhere with the “nuclear football” (the briefcase)

– Inside: pre-planned strike options. Basically a menu

That’s it. No vote required. If a decision is made, the timeline is insane:

– Call goes out to the Pentagon

– Identity gets confirmed

– Order is transmitted

– Missiles can launch in ~2 minutes

Once they’re in the air, you can’t stop them.

And here’s the part people miss:

The president does NOT need approval. Advisors can object, argue, panic, doesn’t matter. Legally, the order can still go through.

This system made sense during the Cold War. The idea was speed. If the U.S. got attacked, you needed to respond before getting wiped out.

But that system never really changed.

Today, that same speed means decisions can be made in minutes, sometimes based on incomplete or even wrong information. False alarms have happened before.

So you end up with this reality:

– Minutes to decide

– No real checks in the moment

– Massive, irreversible consequences

That’s why experts keep warning about it. Not because nuclear war is likely every day, but because the system leaves almost no margin for error if something goes wrong.

And everything about the current global situation is increasing the chances of something going wrong.
