I want to talk about one of the ladies I had a relationship with while I was in school. Looking back now, it was one of those experiences that seemed small at the time, but it taught me something about kindness, expectations, and entitlement.
I met this girl last year when I was in school. She stayed in the school hostel, and one Saturday morning around 9 a.m., she texted me saying she was extremely hungry. I told her not to worry because I had already cooked, so she came over to eat. I didn't think much of it; I was simply happy to help someone I cared about.
After eating, she went into my kitchen and saw that I had stocked up on foodstuff. Suddenly, it was like she had discovered a supermarket. She started asking me to give her some of my provisions. I refused and told her she could always come around to eat whenever she was hungry, but I wasn't giving away the foodstuff I had bought for myself.
She got upset and told me that if I didn't give her the foodstuff, she wouldn't come to my place again. I honestly couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had just fed her, and now she was angry because I wouldn't give her the food I had bought with my own money.
She eventually left angrily, and I've thought about that incident several times since then. I don't mind helping someone I care about when I can, but there's a big difference between appreciating someone's kindness and feeling entitled to it. The moment your kindness becomes something someone expects or demands, the whole situation changes.
Now I want your honest opinion: did I do the right thing by refusing to give her my foodstuff, or was I being too stingy? If you were in my position, what would you have done?
