LOVE STORY CHALLENGE: LEAVE

The Goodbye That Finally Brought Me Peace

People always ask why I kept going back.

The truth is, I don't think I was going back to the person, I was going back to the memories.

To the version of us that existed before the lies, before the misunderstandings, before every conversation became an argument and every apology sounded like a script we'd both memorized.

The first time we broke up, I couldn't eat for days. I stared at my phone every few minutes, hoping it would light up with your name. When it finally did, all it took was one message.

"Can we talk?"

We talked, We promised each other that we'd do better.

For a while, we really did.

The good mornings came back.

The random "Have you eaten?" messages returned.

We laughed again, planned trips we never took, and convinced ourselves that love had won, Until it hadn't.

The same issues slowly found their way back into our lives. The conversations we kept avoiding became impossible to ignore. We were no longer fighting because one of us was wrong. We were fighting because we had become two people who no longer knew how to love each other without hurting each other.

Then we'd break up again.

A few weeks would pass, loneliness would begin to sound like love, and one of us would reach out.

"I miss you."

Those three words were enough to make us forget everything that had broken us.

Each reunion felt like opening the same book and expecting a different ending.

I wasn't staying because I was happy, I was staying because I was terrified.

Terrified that I had already invested too many years to walk away.

Terrified that I would never find anyone who understood me the way you once did.

Terrified of watching you become everything I had prayed for... with someone else.

It took me a long time to realize that fear can wear the same face as love.

The moment everything changed wasn't after a big fight.

It happened on an ordinary Tuesday.

We were sitting together in complete silence. No phones, No distractions, And suddenly, I realized I felt lonelier sitting beside you than I ever did sitting by myself.

That frightened me more than the thought of losing you.

For the first time, I stopped asking myself, "How do I save this relationship?"

Instead, I asked, "When was the last time I truly felt at peace?"

I couldn't remember, So I chose something I had been avoiding for years, to let go.

Not because I stopped loving you, a part of me probably always will.

I let go because I finally understood that love is not supposed to feel like constantly trying to fix what keeps breaking.

When we said goodbye for the last time, it seems normal, Just two exhausted people looking at each other with tears in their eyes, finally accepting what we'd refused to admit for years, that sometimes two good people simply bring out the worst in each other.

Months have passed since that day.

I still think about you when I hear certain songs. I still smile when I pass some certain location where we both had some memories, some still make me laugh, and others still make me cry.

But something has changed.

For the first time in a very long time, my heart is quiet, I've learned that peace isn't the absence of love, Sometimes, peace is choosing yourself after spending too long choosing a relationship that no longer chose you.

LEAVE.

Because the hardest person to walk away from isn't the one you stopped loving.

It's the one you kept hoping would become the person you always believed they could be.
