People often think breakups happen because love disappears, but sometimes the truth is far more painful. Sometimes, two people still love each other and still have to say goodbye. It isn't because they stopped caring; it's because love alone couldn't fix what was broken. Maybe the trust was gone, the respect had faded, one person kept giving while the other kept taking, or they simply wanted different futures but were too afraid to admit it.
The saddest part is that they didn't leave because they hated each other. They left because staying had become more painful than walking away. There is one kind of pain in leaving someone you no longer love, but there is a deeper pain in leaving someone your heart still longs for. You still remember their favourite song, smile when you hear their name, and sometimes reach for your phone, wanting to tell them about your day. Then reality reminds you why you had to leave.
Love should never become a prison where your happiness is sacrificed just to keep someone else comfortable. Sometimes we hold on because we're waiting for the person we fell in love with to return. We hold on to memories, hoping yesterday will somehow become today again. But people don't always return to who they used to be, and while you're waiting for yesterday, today keeps breaking your heart.
One of the greatest acts of self-love is accepting that someone can have your love without having your future. Not every love story is meant to end at the altar. Some people enter your life to teach you lessons that prepare you for the person you're truly meant to spend forever with.
The hardest goodbye is not the one spoken with anger. It's the one whispered through tears, where both hearts still care but both souls know it's time to let go. Sometimes, the bravest thing you'll ever do is walk away from the person you still pray for—not because you stopped loving them, but because you finally started loving yourself too.
Sometimes, love isn't proven by holding on. Sometimes, love is having the courage to let go when staying is costing you your peace.
