Relationship that always make me a second choice
from the outside, we looked like the couple everyone admired.
We had beautiful pictures together. We celebrated birthdays with matching outfits, posted anniversary photos that made people comment, "God when?" and laughed so much in public that everyone assumed we had the kind of relationship people dream about.
What nobody saw were the moments not online.
They never saw me sitting alone in restaurants after reserving a table for two because you texted at the last minute saying, "I'm so sorry, work came up."
They didn't know how many birthdays ended with me blowing out candles alone while telling everyone, "He's trying his best."
I became so good at making excuses for you that I almost believed them myself, At first, I understood.
You were hardworking, ambitious, and determined to build a future we could both be proud of. I admired your drive because I knew where you came from. I knew you wanted more for us than the life you had growing up.
I waited through rushed phone calls that always ended with, "Can I call you back?" , vacations postponed because there was always another opportunity you couldn't afford to miss.
I kept telling myself that one day, when life became less busy, we'd finally have time for us.
But somehow, there was always something more important than us.
One evening, after months of barely spending any meaningful time together, I asked a simple question.
"Are you still happy with me?"
"Of course I am. Why would you even ask that?"
I smiled and changed the subject because I didn't know how to explain that someone can love you and still make you feel invisible.
The moment that changed everything came on the day, I was involved in a minor accident. I wasn't seriously injured, but I was shaken, scared, and sitting alone in a hospital waiting room wondering who I wanted beside me.
Without thinking, I gave the nurse his number.
No answer.
She left a voicemail explaining where I was.
Instead, my phone finally rang.
Before I could say anything, he asked,
"I'm just leaving a meeting. Was it really that serious?"
I don't know why those words hurt so much.
Maybe because, in that moment, I realized I had stopped expecting grand romantic gestures a long time ago.
All I wanted was to know that when life became frightening, I would be the first place your heart ran to, Instead, I felt like another appointment on his schedule.
he said work had been overwhelming and his phone had been on silent that he never meant to make me feel unimportant.
But intentions don't erase patterns.
That night, after I got home, I sat quietly in the dark replaying our entire relationship in my mind.
I realized I'd spent years celebrating the moments you managed to show up instead of questioning why I had become so accustomed to your absence.
Loving you had slowly turned into waiting for you.
Waiting for a version of our relationship that never seemed to arrive.
I loved you deeply, I probably always will.
But I couldn't spend the rest of my life hoping that one day I'd finally become as important to you as everything else.
So I walked away.
But because I finally understood that love should feel like coming home, not like standing outside the door, hoping someone remembers you're still waiting.
I LEAVE BECAUSE.
Because the saddest kind of loneliness isn't being alone.
It's loving someone with your whole heart while constantly wondering when they'll finally have time to love you back the same way.
