JAPA STORY CORNER

She Missed Home

When Christy finally relocated, she was happy.

For years, she had been saying, “I just want to leave Nigeria and start afresh.”

So when her visa came through, she couldn't wait to leave. Her family celebrated with her, her friends were excited, and everyone kept telling her, “You’re lucky.”

The first few weeks were exciting. She took pictures, explored her new environment and enjoyed telling people back home about her new life.

Then reality started settling in.

Work was stressful. She had to do almost everything herself. Some days, she came back to her apartment tired and had nobody to talk to.

One evening, she called her sister and heard everyone at home laughing in the background.

That was when she started crying.

“I miss you people,” she said.

Her sister laughed and replied, “But you said you wanted to japa!”

Christy laughed too, but deep down, she knew she missed home badly.

She didn't regret leaving. She still wanted the opportunities her new country offered. She just realised that wanting a better life doesn't mean you won't miss the life you left behind.

Sometimes, you can be happy abroad and still miss your mother's food, your friends, family gatherings and even the little things you used to complain about.
