When Mariam received her admission letter from a university in Canada, her family celebrated as if they had all gained admission.
She was the first in her family to get such an opportunity, and everyone believed she was on her way to a better life.
But shortly after she shared the news, the requests began.
Her younger brother needed money for his business. Her mother wanted her to contribute to a family project. An aunt started telling relatives that Mariam would soon be sending money home regularly.
Nobody seemed to remember that she was still trying to figure out how to pay her tuition and cover her living expenses.
One evening, during a family call, Mariam finally spoke up.
“Mummy, I'm not going abroad because I already have money. I'm going because I'm trying to build a future. I need support too.”
The call went quiet.
Some relatives accused her of changing because of the opportunity. Others eventually understood that her admission did not mean she had suddenly become wealthy.
Mariam learned a difficult lesson before even boarding her flight: sometimes, the pressure waiting for you abroad begins at home.
She still loved her family, but she started setting clear boundaries. She explained her budget, separated her school expenses from family requests, and stopped making promises she couldn't afford to keep.
Her dream was still alive, but this time, she was determined not to sacrifice her entire future to meet everybody's expectations.
The reality: Relocating for school or work can come with family pressure, especially when people expect immediate financial rewards. Supporting loved ones is beautiful, but your own stability matters too.
A relocation plan should include honest conversations about money, realistic expectations, and boundaries before you travel.
Share this with someone preparing to relocate. Sometimes, the most important preparation happens before the journey begins.
