🚨 The Student Visa Mistake That Ruins Relocation Plans

When applying for a Study Permit to major destinations like the US, Australia, or Canada, one wrong phrase in your Statement of Purpose (SOP) or interview can lead to an immediate visa denial under "Failure to Prove Intent to Leave."

Visa officers are legally bound to evaluate non-immigrant applications on whether you will comply with temporary entry terms. Admitting to an improper plan right at the application stage is one of the quickest routes to a refusal.

1️⃣ The Mistake: Confusing "Long-Term Goals" with "Immediate Intent"

  • The Trap: Writing things like: "I am applying for this Master's degree in Canada so I can get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and apply for Express Entry PR."

  • Why it fails: While countries actively promote post-study work pathways, stating that your primary goal for a temporary entry visa is to immigrate permanently gives the officer reason to doubt you will respect temporary visa conditions if your PR fails.

2️⃣ The Solution: Frame Education as a Career Investment Your SOP and interview answers must frame your degree as a logical step for your international career or home country market:

  • The Fix: "This degree bridges a specific skills gap in my home country’s market, enabling me to return and qualify for senior roles such as [Job Title] at companies like [Target Employers]."

3️⃣ How "Dual Intent" Actually Works in Practice Legally, Dual Intent allows you to hope for long-term immigration while genuinely agreeing to follow temporary visa terms.

  • The Golden Rule: You can apply for Permanent Residency or Post-Study Work Permits after you land and start studying.

  • The Entry Requirement: To get the initial visa approved, your application must show undeniable ties to your home country (property, family commitments, or clear career progression).
