🚨 Proof of Funds (POF): How to Avoid the #1 Cause of Visa Refusals

You got the university admission or the Express Entry draw—congratulations! But now comes the real test: proving to immigration officers that your money is real, accessible, and legal.

A sudden, unexplained deposit into your bank account weeks before applying is a fast track to a visa refusal under "unexplained source of funds." Visa officers care just as much about where the money came from as how much is in the account.

Here is what you actually need to know about POF:

1️⃣ What Immigration Authorities Count as "Clean" Funds

  • Aged Personal Savings: Cash sitting in your liquid account held for the required seasoning period (e.g., 28 consecutive days for the UK, or 4–6 months of consistent balance history for Canada).

  • Fixed Deposits & Investments: Cashable investment certificates, mutual funds, or government bonds that can be liquidated immediately with proof of access.

  • Official Student Loans & Scholarships: Approved education loans from regulated financial institutions or official award letters from recognized bodies.

  • Direct Parent/Guardian Sponsorship: Funds in a parent’s account, backed by legal proof of relationship (like a birth certificate) and an official affidavit of consent.

2️⃣ What WILL Get You Refused

  • ❌ Real estate, land titles, or physical assets (these are not liquid cash).

  • ❌ "Lump Sum" deposits right before filing without a clear paper trail (e.g., selling a car or land without official sales contracts and transfer receipts).

  • ❌ Funds provided by distant relatives, friends, or third-party "sponsors" where direct legal dependence cannot be established.

  • ❌ Unverifiable accounts or financial printouts without formal bank authorization.

3️⃣ How to Handle a Gift Deed Legally If a parent or legal guardian is transferring funds to you:

  • Execute an official, notarized Deed of Gift or Affidavit of Support.

  • Provide their bank statement showing where they obtained the funds prior to the transfer (e.g., salary slips, asset sale documents, business dividends).

  • Transfer the funds directly into your account with clear banking descriptions matching the gift documentation.
