Many people prepare for visa applications, flight tickets, accommodation, and getting a job abroad. But one thing that can catch you off guard is culture shock.
Imagine arriving in a new country and discovering that the things you consider normal in Nigeria are completely different there.
Here are a few realities to prepare for:
1. Communication styles: People may be more direct, formal, or reserved than you're used to. Don't always interpret their communication style as rudeness.
2. Time and punctuality: In some places, arriving late for work, appointments, or meetings is taken very seriously.
3. Living independently: You may have to cook, clean, do your laundry, and handle every household responsibility yourself, even when you're tired from work or school.
4. Making friends: Building a new social circle can take time. People may be friendly without becoming close friends immediately.
5. The cost of everyday life: Rent, transport, groceries, and other bills can take a large part of your income. A good salary doesn't automatically mean a comfortable life.
6. Food and familiar traditions: You may miss Nigerian food, family gatherings, local celebrations, and the comfort of speaking your language freely.
The truth is, relocating is not just about changing your location. It's also about adapting to a different way of life.
Before you travel, research the culture, understand the cost of living, learn the local rules, and connect with people who already live there. Give yourself time to adjust, too. You don't have to figure everything out on your first day.
For those already living abroad, your experience could help someone prepare better. Share one unexpected cultural difference you encountered after relocating.
