Amaka was done with love. Six failed relationships, each more painful than the last, had left her emotionally exhausted. The last one had shattered her trust completely an engagement that ended just a month before the wedding when she found out he had another family in Port Harcourt.

At 36, Amaka had built a good life on her own. She ran a modest interior design business in Lagos, had a cozy apartment in VGC and was surrounded by supportive friends. But when it came to love, her heart had hardened. She would smile at weddings, clap during bridal showers and offer advice to her younger cousins, but deep inside, she believed love was just not for her.

Then came the contract that changed everything.

She had been recommended to design a small office space for a tech startup in Ikeja. The CEO, Chuka, was kind, soft-spoken and had an eye for detail. At first, their conversations were strictly professional measurements, layouts and budgets. Gradually, she noticed he remembered the little things: how she liked her tea, how she would hum while sketching, how her eyes lit up when talking about art.

He never pushed. He respected her space and for the first time in years, Amaka didn’t feel the need to put on a guard. She laughed more, she found herself looking forward to site visits, she even wore lipstick again not for him, but for herself. She felt alive.

One evening, after the project was completed, he invited her to a simple dinner to say thank you. Nothing extravagant, just quiet jazz, good food and genuine conversation. That night, when he walked her to her car, he said, “I don’t know what your story has been, but I’d like to be part of the next chapter only if you let me.”

Tears welled up in her eyes not from sadness, but from healing. Slowly, love had found its way back into her life. Today, Amaka still runs her business, now co-owned with her husband, Chuka. They often tell people they didn’t fall in love, they grew into it, one silent smile and one thoughtful act at a time.
