When Akosua, a 36-year-old teacher from Accra, was diagnosed with breast cancer, she thought the most difficult part of her journey would be the chemotherapy sessions, the endless hospital visits and the uncertainty of her health. But nothing prepared her for the emotional blow that came from her own home.
Married for eight years to Kwame, the couple shared a seven-year-old daughter, Afia. Akosua believed that, despite the illness, their family bond would remain unshaken. She pictured Kwame holding her hand through the pain, just as she had supported him during his career struggles.
As her hair began to thin and the medical bills mounted, Kwame’s attitude shifted. He grew distant, spending less time at home and avoiding conversations about her treatment. One evening, as Akosua was resting after a particularly draining chemotherapy session, Kwame sat her down and told her he wanted a divorce.
His reason was as devastating as the announcement itself, he feared their daughter might “inherit” her mother’s illness. He said he didn’t want the burden of raising a child who could face the same fate. Kwame not only wanted out of the marriage, but he also insisted he didn’t want custody of Afia.
“I couldn’t believe the man I married was speaking those words,” Akosua said, tears filling her eyes. “I am fighting for my life and at the same time, I have to fight for my daughter’s future.”
Now, Akosua continues her treatment while raising Afia on her own, determined to show her that strength is not the absence of pain, but the courage to live in spite of it. Friends and members of her church have rallied around her, organizing small fundraisers to help cover medical expenses.
