Bold Goodbye

Ayo, an American citizen, had lived all her life in the United States until she visited Nigeria for her favorite uncle’s birthday. It was during that trip that she was introduced to Obinna. One thing led to another and a year later, they got married.

Ayo made the bold decision to relocate to Nigeria to be with her husband and for a while, everything seemed perfect.

Three years later, Obinna’s mother was celebrating her 70th birthday, so the couple traveled to their village for the occasion. The party was a huge success and Ayo was genuinely happy to reconnect with everyone she hadn’t seen since the wedding.

The following day, while having lunch, a few of Obinna’s friends came to visit. Ayo greeted them warmly, ushered them in and returned to her meal. They began conversing in Igbo, assuming Ayo didn’t understand. What they didn’t know was that she had been secretly learning the language for months. She had hoped to surprise her husband once she became fluent.

As the conversation flowed, one of Obinna’s friends jokingly asked him about his ex, saying, “If you could turn back the hands of time, would you go back to her?”

Obinna’s response was a firm and unapologetic “Yes.”

He went on to explain how much he missed her, how he regretted marrying me. He said he wished I had stayed in America and simply helped him relocate instead of moving to Nigeria to be with him. Then he started asking his friends if they could help him reconnect with his ex, saying she had blocked him on all social media platforms.

I sat there, stunned, I was angry and hurt. Four years of my life, just like that. With a man I thought truly loved me and I was pregnant.

I looked up, locked eyes with him and in clear, fluent Igbo, I said:

“Thank you for thinking so little of me. The audacity to speak about your ex, while I’m sitting right here, is the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

They were all in shock. No one had known I could understand, let alone speak, Igbo so well. I didn’t say another word. I stood up, packed my bags and returned to Abuja.

I filed for a divorce and moved out of his property. I chose peace, self-respect and a future without deception.

What’s your take did Mrs. Ayo overrate???
