The Silence

Halima was one of the kindest women I’ve ever known quiet, gentle, always smiling. She and her husband, Idris, had one little girl Zainab. That child was their world.

One day, Zainab fell sick suddenly. It wasn’t even that serious at first, but things got worse fast. Halima rushed her to the hospital and by afternoon the child was gone.

I was there when she came back home, holding only the child’s clothes. She sat on the floor for hours, crying, holding onto Zainab’s blanket like it was her last hope.

That evening, Idris came back from work and you won’t believe it he didn’t say a word. Not even “What happened?” He just walked past her, went inside, and started scrolling on his phone like nothing had happened.

Halima waited, hoping he’d at least ask, maybe hold her, but nothing. That was the moment she broke.

The next morning, she quietly packed and left with a heavy heart. When asked why, she said

“I lost my child, but I lost my husband the day he looked at me and said nothing.”
