What was meant to be the happiest weekend of their lives turned into heartbreak when Ella called off her wedding to Tolu just two days before they were set to say “I do.”

The reason? A last-minute prenuptial agreement.

According to Ella, she wasn’t opposed to signing a prenup in principle. “I understand protecting assets,” she said. “What Tolu gave me wasn’t protection, it was a list of insults wrapped in legal terms.”

The document, handed to her just 48 hours before the wedding, contained strict financial clauses that not only limited her access to shared property, but also seemed to assume the worst, that she might someday take advantage of him. From lifestyle clauses to conditions about divorce penalties, Ella said the agreement treated her more like a potential threat than a life partner.

“I felt like he saw me as someone trying to take something from him, not someone he wanted to build a life with,” she said. “How do you promise forever while also preparing for the end?”

After several tearful conversations and failed attempts at understanding, Ella made the difficult decision to call off the wedding. Though devastated, she said the decision was about preserving her self-respect and emotional safety. “Marriage is built on trust. If we’re starting with suspicion, what are we really building?”
