I was in my final year at university when I met Williams. He loved me in the purest, most unconditional way. The kind of love that makes you feel safe, seen and cherished. When he got a job offer in the UK and moved abroad, I was terrified. I didn’t believe in long-distance relationships, I thought they were a slow fade, well Williams made it work.
He turned the distance into something beautiful.
He flew back to Nigeria every three months without fail. He showered me with thoughtful gifts, checked in constantly and never missed a day without our video calls. He made loving him easy, even across oceans.
The day of my convocation came and to my surprise, Williams flew in again. But this time, it wasn’t just to visit. He showed up, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
I said yes, through tears, laughter and disbelief. It felt like a dream.
We had our court wedding and just like that, I became Mrs. Williams. Everything was perfect or so I thought.
Williams began working on getting my relocation sorted so I could join him in the UK. But months passed. Then a year. Then two. Paperwork delays, embassy issues every time we got close, something fell through.
Meanwhile, life moved on. Williams started visiting only once a year, mostly because we had two major financial commitments: he was building a house in his village and had just bought a home in the UK. I also got a job and was running a small business by the side, I tried to stay strong, telling myself this was just a phase.
Finally, after two long years, I got my papers. The house project in the village was nearly complete, so I took the next big step, I packed up our belongings and moved them into the new house, ready to close that chapter and start a new one with my husband.
But when I arrived, I was met with something I never expected. A young, visibly pregnant girl was at the house. The way she looked at me sent shivers down my spine. I had to speak with her and that’s when she dropped the truth or what she claimed was the truth.
She said Williams was the father of her unborn child. That during his last visit to check on the house, they had a brief affair and now he was denying all responsibility.
I stood there, frozen. Every piece of our love story every flight, every gift, every whispered promise suddenly felt like it was unraveling in my hands.
I don’t know what to believe. I feel confused, hurt, and deeply betrayed. This wasn’t supposed to be part of our story. I waited. I sacrificed. I loved him with everything I had.
And now I’m left questioning everything.
