Former Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has signed a contract with Inter Miami for the upcoming season, the Major League Soccer side said on Wednesday.
Suarez, who turns 39 in January, joined Lionel Messi’s outfit in 2024 before helping the club to the 2025 MLS Cup and Eastern Conference title.

The former Barcelona, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid attacker won the Champions League, La Liga and the League Cup during his time in Europe.

“Suarez signs a new contract after recently concluding the historic 2025 season for what was his second year at the club,” Inter Miami said.

“The striker’s vast experience and leadership were crucial as Inter Miami clinched its third and fourth titles by winning the Eastern Conference Championship and the MLS Cup… while also excelling on the international stage with a historic run to the round of 16 at the revamped 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and reaching the semifinals of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

“Suarez made a total 50 appearances across all competitions in 2025, scoring 17 goals and dishing out 17 assists for a total 34 goal contributions,” it added.

“They won against Inter Miami this season twice. But what does it mean?,” Mueller said.

“It gives you a little bit of good feeling. But in the end, the game is decided on the pitch and on Saturday — in the future.

“So it’s a nice thing to talk about, and I hope we can continue to talk about it Saturday after the game.”

As well as the 2014 World Cup final, Mueller’s wins over Messi include Bayern Munich’s 8-2 humiliation of Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2020, when the German star scored twice and was man-of-the-match.

He also played in Bayern’s 2-0 Champions League second leg win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 in a game that would turn out to be Messi’s last appearance in European competition.

Lionel Messi scored two goals and assisted on two by Tadeo Allende to spark Inter Miami in a 4–0 rout of Nashville on Saturday to advance in the MLS Cup playoffs, as the Argentine icon hit 894 career goals and 400 assists.

“It would have been very unfair to be eliminated at this stage,” Mascherano said. “What happened last year it had remained a bit in the atmosphere and you could feel that fear that it could happen again. And now there is nothing better than looking forward.”

In the night’s other match, 10-man Minnesota United rallied to eliminate Seattle 7-6 on penalty kicks after playing to a 3-3 draw in a Western Conference thriller, booking a second round match against Sunday’s winner between Portland and San Diego.

At Cincinnati, Canadian Jacen Russell-Rowe gave Columbus a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute but Brazilian striker Brenner Souza answered in the 67th and 86th to send Cincinnati into a second-round home match against Miami.

“It’s going to be a very tough conference semifinal,” Mascherano said. “We were below in the regular season but in the second leg we played here I was left with very good feelings.”

Minnesota moves on

At Minnesota, the series was not decided until the 10th round of penalties when Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, injured making a save in the opening round after being inserted for the shootout, clanged the ball off the crossbar.

Seattle equalized at 3-3 on a goal by Jordan Morris in the 88th minute but when the penalty shootout arrived, the Sounders replaced keeper Stefan Frei for backup Thomas.

Minnesota’s Joaquin Pereyra missed the first penalty kick wide right and Thomas hurt a hand diving for the ball but stayed in the match.

Morris hit the crossbar in the second round and in sudden-death rounds Thomas made two saves but Seattle missed both chances to win, Obed Vargas hitting the left post and Osaze De Rosario’s shot being saved by Minnesota’s Dayne St. Clair.

MLS Goalkeeper of the Year St. Clair scored in the 10th round and Thomas missed to give the Loons the victory.

An 89th-minute goal from Lionel Messi was too little, too late as Nashville SC beat Inter Miami 2-1 on Saturday to stay alive in their MLS Cup round one playoff series.

First-half goals from Sam Surridge and Josh Bauer put Nashville in control at a rainy Geodis Park in Tennessee.

Surridge converted a penalty in the ninth minute to put the hosts in front, slotting to the right of Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo.

Nashville were awarded the spot kick after Rios Novo hesitated coming off his line against a charging Surridge.

Bauer put Nashville 2-0 up on the stroke of halftime, sliding in left-footed after a corner by Hany Mukhtar.

Miami opened the second half in determined style but Luis Suarez’s close-range shot in the 66th minute was parried by Nashville keeper Joe Willis.

Miami and Messi stepped it up in the waning minutes.

Rodrigo De Paul found Messi in the box in the 89th minute and the newly crowned MLS Golden Boot winner wrong-footed his defender and fired a left-footed shot into the top right corner.

Miami had seized control of the series with a 3-1 game one win fueled by a Messi brace, but now they’ll have to host a decisive game three.

It’s an unwelcome reminder of last year, when Miami went into the playoffs having posted the best record in the regular season and won their opening game against Atlanta United only for Atlanta to win the next two and send them packing.

Philadelphia advance

Philadelphia Union, the Eastern Conference top seeds and winners of the Supporters Shield with the best record in the league, advanced with a 3-0 victory over Chicago Fire.

Tai Baribo scored twice with crisp finishes in the eighth and 16th minutes and Bruno Damiani added a third in the 35th.

Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake saved a penalty from Brian Gutierrez in the first half and was rarely called on otherwise.

Philadelphia, who beat Chicago in a penalty shoot-out after playing to a 2-2 draw in game one, next face either Charlotte FC or New York City FC in a one-game conference semi-final.

Charlotte forced a game three against NYCFC with a penalty shoot-out victory after the teams played to a goalless draw at Yankee Stadium.

In the Western Conference, Vancouver Whitecaps advanced with a dramatic victory at FC Dallas, topping the hosts in a penalty shoot-out after Ralph Priso pulled Vancouver level at 1-1 in second-half stoppage time.

A corner kick by Sebastian Berhalter found Thomas Muller who knocked it into the path of Priso. His first shot was saved but he slotted home the rebound.

Vancouver had won the opening game of the series 3-0 but were down early in this one, Peter Musa putting Dallas ahead in the 25th minute.

Muller, Berhalter, Kenji Cabrera and Belal Halbouni came through in the shoot-out and Vancouver will host either Los Angeles FC or Austin FC in a Western Conference semi-final.

The Portland Timbers forced a decisive game three against Western Conference top seeds San Diego with a shoot-out win after the teams drew 2-2.

Saudi Arabia declined an offer to sign Lionel Messi for a short-term stint in the Saudi Pro League before next year’s World Cup, according to a senior sports official.

“During the last Club World Cup, Messi’s team contacted me and offered for him to play in Saudi Arabia because the MLS will stop for nearly four months,” Abdullah Hammad, CEO of the Mahd Sports Academy, said during a podcast with Saudi platform Thmanyah.

“The player wanted to remain in shape and prepare himself for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.”

“This happened with David Beckham when he was with Los Angeles Galaxy and went to AC Milan (in 2010),” he added.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi moved to Inter Miami in 2023 after being linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia. That followed a two-year spell with Paris Saint-Germain, the club he joined in 2021 after ending his long association with Barcelona.

Hammad explained that he relayed the offer to the minister of sports, who rejected it. “The minister made it clear that the Saudi league would not serve as a preparation platform for other tournaments,” he said.

In response to a question about whether Saudi Arabia had rejected Messi, he replied: “That’s true.”

Inter Miami full back and former Barcelona FC defender, Jordi Alba has announced his decision to retire from professional football.

His announcement comes in the heels of Sergio Busquet’s decision a week ago after he announced his retirement despite that he (Alba) has signed a contract extension with Miami through the 2027 season.

Prior to concluding his career with the Herons, the renowned Spanish left back made appearances in 700 professional club games while playing for FC Barcelona, Valencia CF, and Gimnàstic de Tarragona.

After fellow Barcelona greats Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, he joined Miami in July 2023.

The Spanish veteran announced his retirement via his social media handle;

“The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life. I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season.

“I do so with complete conviction, with peace and with happiness because I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had,” Jordi Alba added. “And now it’s the right moment to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.”

With Valencia CF and Barça, Alba scored 37 goals and provided 107 assists in 605 games in all competitions for the most of his illustrious career in La Liga.

He won the 2015 UEFA Champions League with Los Blaugrana and was a six-time La Liga winner. He and Messi famously had an iconic collaboration at Barcelona that has continued into Major League Soccer.

For Spain, he scored a total of 10 goals across 93 appearances and was part of the squad that won the 2012 EUROs Championships and 2023 UEFA Nations League.

For Inter Miami, Alba has helped them win the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup 2023, putting up 14g/28a in 95 all-competition games.

Inter Miami’s former Barcelona and Spain star Sergio Busquets said on Thursday that he will retire from football at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season.

The 37-year-old midfielder made the announcement in a social media post.

“These will be my last months on the pitch. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful,” Busquets said in a video on his Instagram page.

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi have agreed to extend the Argentine superstar’s contract to remain in Major League Soccer (MLS) beyond next year’s World Cup, according to a source close to the matter.

The contract extension would ensure that 38-year-old remains in competitive action until and after the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

An official announcement is expected within the next two weeks, said the source contacted by AFP late Wednesday, and would mean Messi ending his career in the MLS.

Inter Miami inflicted revenge on the Seattle Sounders with a 3-1 win at Chase Stadium in MLS.

Just 16 days after their Leagues Cup final defeat to the Sounders, Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi and Ian Fray got on the scoresheet to help Miami move within eight points of Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia Union with three games in hand.

The hosts opened the scoring after 12 minutes through Alba. Yannick Bright and Messi dispossessed Cristian Roldan in the attacking half and the Argentinian forward drove to the edge of the box before putting the ball on a plate for Alba to finish.

Messi then struck the woodwork on the half-hour mark before doubling the lead four minutes before the break. Bright once again regained possession before playing Alba down the left wing, and the Spaniard found Messi in the middle with a low cross that the captain was able to slide home.

Stefan Frei managed to deny Messi from getting a second two minutes later, punching the ball around the post from the forward's dragged effort, but was unable to stop Fray's powerful header from Rodrigo De Paul's corner six minutes into the second half.

Seattle had their chances in the second period, with Osaze De Rosario missing a great opportunity from 10 yards out, but they did get what turned out to be a consolation goal in the 69th minute as Obed Vargas finished past Oscar Ustari with a first-time shot from Jordan Morris' cutback.

“Impacting the flow of the game was going to be really important,” explained head coach Mikey Varas postgame. “They're a top team. We knew the environment was going to be tough, Son’s first home game, so there was going to be a lot of electricity around this game…

With the victory, SDFC tied St. Louis CITY SC for the most wins by an expansion team in MLS history (17), one point away from tying LAFC (57) for the expansion points record.

The win was also their seventh straight away triumph, tying the league record for the longest single-season road winning streak in just their first-ever season.

“I think that's what we dreamt of in the beginning of the season, that we wanted to create something magical this season,” said Anders Dreyer, who scored the winning goal. “We wanted to show California that we are the best team.”

The Chrome & Azul did exactly that, handing LAFC their first loss of the league season when scoring first to complete the season sweep over both Los Angeles rivals and extend their record against California opposition to a perfect 5-0.

So, does it feel like one of the biggest wins of San Diego’s incredible inaugural season?

“Yeah, I think so. For me, it does,” affirmed Dreyer.

Devastating duo

Although most of the night’s focus was on Son’s home debut and his partner Denis Bouanga reaching the 15-goal mark for a third consecutive season, it was the SDFC attacking duo that made the biggest impact with goals from Dreyer and fellow Designated Player Chucky Lozano.

“Their talent always shines through when the collective is [humming]. These guys are guys with a lot of talent. They also work really hard,” praised Varas. “You see, they press and they run back and they defend low, and they do the little things, and we know when they do those little things, their talent will shine through. I think they've been great.”

Assisting Lozano for his equalizer, Dreyer extended his lead atop the MLS goal contribution charts to 32 contributions (14g/18a), three above Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi (19g/10a), as he continues to make his Landon Donovan MLS MVP case on the field.
