It has finally happened. The rumours circulating around Plateau politics for weeks have been confirmed. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party.
The announcement came as a shock to many, especially considering how the party fought tooth and nail to secure his victory in the 2023 gubernatorial elections. The legal battles went all the way to the Supreme Court, and PDP stood by him through it all.
So what could have gone wrong?
Sources close to the Government House in Jos are saying that the Governor has been having serious disagreements with the party leadership over control of the state structure. Some are even whispering that there's a new godfather in town trying to call the shots, and Mutfwang wasn't having any of it.
Others are pointing fingers at the national leadership of PDP, claiming they've abandoned Plateau State and left the Governor to his own devices. "How can you expect loyalty when there's no support?" one party chieftain was quoted as saying.
But here's where it gets interesting. The big question on everyone's lips now is: where is Mutfwang headed?
Is he joining the ruling APC like we've seen with other governors recently? Or is he planning to join one of the emerging third forces that are springing up across the country? Some political analysts are even speculating that he might go independent or join forces with Labour Party.
The timing of this defection is also raising eyebrows. With the 2027 elections just around the corner, many are wondering if this is a calculated political move to secure a second term ticket, or if it's a genuine ideological disagreement with PDP.
The PDP faithful in Plateau are already crying foul.
They're calling it betrayal and ingratitude, reminding everyone of how the party invested heavily in his electoral victory. Some party leaders have even threatened to recall him or make governance difficult for him.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties are jubilating, seeing this as an opportunity to finally break PDP's hold on Plateau State.
What's certain is that Plateau politics just got a whole lot more interesting. The coming weeks will reveal where Governor Mutfwang's loyalty truly lies and whether this bold move will pay off or backfire spectacularly.
Will PDP survive this blow in Plateau State?
Can Mutfwang survive without the party that brought him to power?
And most importantly, what does this mean for the people of Plateau who are caught in the middle of this political chess game?
Let's discuss in the comments section. What do you think motivated this defection?
