The Nigerian Senate has sent a strong message to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs): show up, defend your budget, or lose it.

In a firm warning issued during budget oversight activities, the Senate cautioned that any MDA that fails to appear before legislative committees to defend its 2026 budget proposal risks having its allocation withdrawn entirely. Even more striking, the funds won’t just sit idle — they will be redirected to priority projects that can deliver clear, measurable results for Nigerians.

This move signals a tougher stance by lawmakers who appear determined to end the era of budget padding, poor accountability, and abandoned projects. According to senators, budget defence is not a formality but a responsibility, and MDAs must justify how public funds will translate into real impact on infrastructure, security, education, healthcare, and the wider economy.
