Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The announcement was made in a statewide broadcast on 27 February 2026. He moved together with commissioners, cabinet members, and party structures across the state.

The governor said the decision followed wide consultations and aims to align Adamawa with the federal government agenda for development and stability. He cited achievements in security, roads, schools, hospitals, and empowerment programmes as part of his administration’s record.

The move comes after several lawmakers in the state assembly had earlier defected, increasing pressure within the PDP structure in Adamawa. Analysts say the defection could significantly alter party control and electoral alignments ahead of future elections.
