Wike's Masterstroke: How The Political Alchemist Turned FCT Gold For Tinubu

Saturday, February 21, 2026, will go down as the day Nyesom Wike proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he is not just a political operator navigating the treacherous waters of naija-politics, but a political alchemist who can turn opposition strongholds into ruling party gold. The FCT Area Council election results have settled any lingering doubts: when Wike promises to deliver, he delivers with precision, ruthlessness, and devastating effectiveness.

The ruling APC claimed five chairmanship seats in the FCT area council elections held on February 21, 2026, with notable victories including Umar Abdullahi Abubakar in Abaji area council and Christopher Maikalangu in AMAC. Gwagwalada saw PDP's Mohammed Kasim emerge victor, securing a significant win against APC's Yahaya Shehu.

Five out of six. That is the scoreline. APC won Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Abaji, Kwali, and Kuje, while PDP managed to salvage only Gwagwalada. And in doing so, Wike has finally broken the jinx about how Abuja people vote.

This is the first time in FCT electoral history that an incumbent party at the federal level has won the majority of Area Council seats. Let that extraordinary fact settle in your mind for a moment.

It did not happen during Obasanjo's era when PDP dominated national politics. It did not happen during Jonathan's tenure when PDP controlled the federal government. And most tellingly, it did not even happen during the famous Buhari era, when the beloved late president enjoyed massive Northern support but still could not deliver Abuja for APC. In fact, in the 2023 presidential election, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the FCT decisively, securing about 59 percent of the vote to defeat Bola Tinubu of the APC, who managed only 19 percent.

Buhari, with all his cult following, lost his own Aso Rock polling unit to Atiku in 2019. The man was president, lived in the Presidential Villa, yet could not win the polling unit where he literally voted. That is how independent-minded and opposition-leaning FCT voters have historically been.

But Wike, in less than three years as FCT Minister, has achieved what no politician before him could: flipping Abuja from opposition territory to ruling party dominance.

How did he do it? Through a combination of infrastructural delivery, strategic political manipulation, and what can only be described as surgical precision in neutralizing opposition.

The infrastructure angle is undeniable. Since assuming office in 2023, Wike has transformed Abuja's landscape. Roads that have been death traps for decades are being reconstructed. Arterial roads are being expanded. Flyovers are springing up. Markets are being renovated. The FCT is visibly different under Wike's watch, and voters noticed.

But infrastructure alone does not win elections in Nigeria. Many governors have built roads and still lost elections. What Wike added to infrastructure was political engineering that bordered on genius.

Remember the pre-election moves? Julius Adamu, the Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship candidate in Bwari Area Council, stepped down to support Joshua Ishaku Musa of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the Saturday elections. In a video shared on social media, Adamu was seen standing beside FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, chanting "PDAPC" .

Less than 24 hours later, Hon. Zadna Dantani, the PDP chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), followed suit and withdrew from the race to support the All Progressives Congress flagbearer, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu. Dantani revealed that his decision was reached following high-level interventions by Wike, whom he described as "the leader of the party and the FCT".

Two PDP candidates, in two crucial Area Councils, stepping down for APC candidates days before the election. The timing was perfect, the execution flawless, and the impact devastating for the opposition.

The results speak for themselves. In AMAC, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC scored 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes. The ADC candidate, Mr. Moses Paul, who was heavily backed by Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement, came second with only 12,109 votes, while PDP polled a humiliating 3,398 votes.

Think about that PDP number: 3,398 votes in AMAC, the most strategic Area Council in FCT. That is not an opposition party. That is a political footnote. And it happened because Wike convinced their candidate to step down just days before the election.

In Bwari, Joshua Ishaku of the APC secured 18,466 votes, defeating the ADC candidate who polled 4,254 votes . Again, the PDP candidate had stepped down, leaving APC to face only weakened opposition.

Now, let us address the elephant in the room: Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar campaigned everywhere in FCT. They visited markets. They spoke at town halls. They mobilized the Obidient Movement. They framed the election as a referendum on Tinubu's government. Obi, in particular, had won FCT decisively in 2023 with 59 percent of the vote.

Yet despite all that grassroots energy, despite all that campaigning, despite the supposed power of the Obidient Movement, APC won five out of six Area Councils.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated the winners and commended Nyesom Wike, minister of the FCT, for his remarkable achievements in the territory, which have yielded political dividends to the governing APC.

"Political dividends." That is presidential language for "Wike, you have delivered exactly what I needed, and you have earned your reward."

Is this a litmus test for the 2027 general election? Absolutely yes, and the implications are profound for anyone operating in the complex ecosystem of naija-politics.

If APC can win FCT Area Council elections in 2026 despite losing the presidential vote there in 2023, it signals several things:

First, infrastructure matters. Voters reward tangible development.

Second, opposition unity is still fragile. Despite Obi and Atiku campaigning together, they could not overcome APC's combination of incumbency advantage and Wike's political machinery.

Third, the Obidient Movement, while loud on social media, is facing serious challenges converting online energy into actual votes when facing a well-oiled political machine backed by infrastructure delivery.

Fourth, Wike's strategy of systematically weakening PDP from within is devastatingly effective. When your own party's candidates step down for the ruling party, you are not an opposition. You are a subsidiary.

But here is the most intriguing question: Can Wike keep supporting Tinubu without losing his relevance in PDP?

The answer, remarkably, is that he already has. Wike was recently recognized by INEC as part of the legitimate PDP leadership faction . He is simultaneously working for APC in FCT, holding a federal ministerial position in Tinubu's government, and being recognized as a PDP leader.

That is not political confusion. That is political mastery. He has positioned himself as indispensable to both sides: useful to Tinubu for delivering Abuja and weakening PDP, and relevant to PDP because he still technically belongs to them and can cause chaos from within.

He earned his flowers on Saturday, no doubt about it. Winning five of the six chairmanship seats not only reinforces the party's organisational strength within the FCT but also positions it strongly ahead of future political contests in the territory.

The skeptics will point out that PDP won Gwagwalada, proving that Wike does not have total control. Fair point. But winning five out of six is not control. It is dominance. And in politics, dominance is all that matters.

For Tinubu, Saturday's results vindicate his decision to keep Wike as FCT Minister despite all the controversies, despite the Rivers State drama, despite the PDP internal battles. Wike has proven his worth as a political ally who can deliver results when it matters.

For the opposition, Saturday's results should trigger serious soul-searching. If Obi and Atiku campaigning together cannot overcome Wike's political engineering in FCT, what makes them think they can defeat Tinubu nationally in 2027?

For PDP, Saturday's results confirm their worst fears: they have a cancer named Wike that is destroying them from within, and they are powerless to remove it because he has federal protection and INEC recognition.

And for Wike himself, Saturday was not just a political victory. It was a statement. A declaration that in the high-stakes, winner-takes-all world of naija-politics, he is not just a player. He is the player. The political alchemist who can turn any metal into gold if given the right tools and the right backing.

The 2027 general election is still 15 months away, but Saturday's FCT results have given us a preview: if Wike can deliver Abuja for Tinubu with this level of precision, what other miracles can he perform in 2027?

What do you think? Did Wike truly earn his flowers on Saturday? Is the FCT result a reliable indicator for 2027, or can the opposition still recover? And most importantly, can anyone stop Wike's political alchemy when he has both infrastructure delivery and ruthless political strategy working in perfect harmony?
