The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has described the deployment of 100 United States military personnel to Bauchi State as a significant turning point in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

Speaking in an interview in Abuja, Agbese said the presence of the US military signals a new phase in Nigeria’s security strategy, one anchored on strengthened international collaboration, intelligence-driven operations, and enhanced military capacity. According to Nigerian defence authorities, the US personnel are operating in a non-combat capacity.

Their mission includes training Nigerian troops, providing technical assistance, and supporting intelligence gathering in operations targeting terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, as well as armed bandits and other criminal networks across the country.

Agbese noted that the development reflects growing international confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding that Nigeria is now engaging global partners from a position of strategic clarity and mutual respect. “For the first time in a long while, Nigeria is engaging a major global power like the United States with clear strategic direction.

President Tinubu has demonstrated bold leadership in repositioning our security architecture and strengthening key international alliances,” he said.

The lawmaker further highlighted improved coordination within the armed forces under the current Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs, stating that renewed synergy has strengthened operational effectiveness and boosted troop morale.

“Our armed forces are better coordinated, better motivated, and increasingly better equipped. This collaboration goes beyond symbolism, it will enhance intelligence gathering, technical expertise, and precision operations against terrorist elements,” Agbese added.

Addressing concerns about national sovereignty, he dismissed suggestions that the presence of foreign troops undermines Nigeria’s independence, insisting that the deployment was initiated at the request of the Nigerian government and remains fully aligned with national security interests.

“This is a strategic partnership aimed at decimating terrorists and protecting vulnerable communities. It reinforces the fact that Nigeria is not alone in this fight,” he stated.

Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, farmer-herder clashes in parts of the Middle Belt, kidnapping for ransom, and separatist agitations in other regions.

Agbese maintained that the evolving Nigeria–US security partnership represents a proactive diplomatic approach focused on measurable results.

“The message is clear: this administration will pursue every lawful and strategic partnership necessary to secure our people. Those financing and aiding terrorism must understand that the space for impunity is rapidly shrinking,” he said.
