In the high-stakes, ever-shifting world of naija-politics, few political operators have mastered the art of controlled chaos quite like Nyesom Wike. And nowhere is his brilliance more evident than in what's playing out in Abuja ahead of tomorrow's Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections.
Two PDP chairmanship candidates have stepped down for APC candidates in the last 48 hours. Both cited "fatherly advice" from Wike. Both submitted formal withdrawal letters to INEC. And both happened in the final days before the election when it's too late for their parties to field replacements.
This is not politics. This is surgical precision.
Julius Adamu, the Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship candidate in Bwari Area Council, stepped down to support Joshua Ishaku Musa of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the Saturday elections. In a video shared on social media, Adamu was seen standing beside FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, chanting "PDAPC" as he announced his decision.
"PDAPC." Think about that portmanteau. It perfectly captures what Wike has achieved: the fusion of PDP and APC into a single entity under his control, working for Tinubu's interests while nominally remaining in the opposition party.
Less than 24 hours later, Hon. Zadna Dantani, the PDP chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), followed suit and withdrew from the race to support the All Progressives Congress flagbearer, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu. Dantani revealed that his decision was reached following high-level interventions by Wike, whom he described as "the leader of the party and the FCT".
Notice what Dantani said: Wike is "the leader of the party." Not just the FCT. The party. The PDP. Wike, who everyone knows is working for Tinubu, is being openly acknowledged by PDP candidates as their party leader.
The cleverness is breathtaking.
Wike made his position crystal clear days earlier: "We have the FCT area council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win. It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stance" .
A PDP minister, on record, saying his duty is to ensure candidates who don't support the APC president "do not win." And then he proceeds to systematically convince PDP candidates to step down for APC candidates. This is political warfare masquerading as mediation.
But here's where Wike's strategy becomes truly sophisticated: the timing. Political analysts view the actions of the PDP candidates as deliberate, noting they carefully chose the timing so as not to allow room for other aspirants or parties to challenge their decisions.
The withdrawals came 48 hours before election day. Too late for PDP to field replacement candidates. Too late for ADC or other parties to capitalize on the vacuum. Too late for voters to fully adjust. Just enough time for APC to consolidate the suddenly unopposed positions.
This will be the first real test of Wike's creditworthiness in Abuja, going by all the infrastructural development projects he has been embarking on since becoming FCT Minister in 2023.
The timing of the FCT elections, exactly one year before the 2027 national elections, makes them especially significant. In the 2023 presidential election, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the FCT decisively, securing about 59% of the vote to defeat Bola Tinubu of the APC, who managed only 19%.
Tinubu lost Abuja badly in 2023. Embarrassingly badly. And Wike has been given one clear mission: deliver FCT for APC in 2027. Tomorrow's area council elections are his dress rehearsal, his chance to prove he can flip Abuja from opposition territory to ruling party stronghold.
If APC sweeps tomorrow despite the Atiku-Obi campaign blitz that's been happening, operating within the brutal dynamics of naija-politics, it will cement Wike's reputation as the most dangerous political operator in Nigeria. The man who can turn opposition parties into APC subsidiaries without them even realizing it's happened.
Can Wike really outmaneuver himself out of the PDP snag until 2027? The evidence suggests he already has. Wike's involvement in what appeared to be cross-party negotiation is consistent with his high-profile role in FCT politics since his appointment as minister in 2023.
He's not hiding anymore. He's openly working for APC while still being recognized as a PDP leader. And PDP candidates are following his instructions to step down for APC opponents. That's not being caught in a snag. That's having complete operational freedom to sabotage your own party.
Can he keep holding down PDP for APC? Again, the answer appears to be yes. INEC just recognized his faction as the legitimate PDP leadership. PDP candidates are calling him "the leader of the party." And no PDP governor or chairman has been able to stop him from systematically weakening their party in Abuja.
But here's the ultimate test: Will he be able to defeat the combination of Atiku and Obi who have been campaigning everywhere, even at market stalls?
The appearances of key opposition figures such as Waziri Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi on the campaign train of the ADC candidate underscores the importance the nascent political party attaches to its performance in the election .
Atiku urged Abuja voters to reject the APC, calling the votes an opportunity for Nigerians to demand change. He said he was joined by other ADC leaders, including Peter Obi, where they engaged voters on the importance of the upcoming polls .
Obi and Atiku have been on the ground. They've visited communities. They've spoken at market stalls. They've mobilized the Obidient movement. They've framed this as a referendum on Tinubu's government.
But Wike has done something they can't counter: he's removed their candidates from the ballot in two crucial area councils. Bwari and AMAC, the two most strategic councils, now have no serious opposition to APC because the PDP candidates withdrew.
ADC still has candidates in those areas, but without PDP competing, APC can consolidate all pro-government votes. The opposition vote remains split between ADC and smaller parties, while APC benefits from both its own base and the PDP voters whose candidates were convinced to step down.
This is political engineering at the highest level. It's not just campaigning harder. It's reshaping the battlefield itself so that victory becomes inevitable.
Tomorrow, Saturday February 21, 2026, we'll find out if Wike's cleverness translates into actual electoral success. If APC wins big in Abuja despite Tinubu's 2023 loss, despite Obi's popularity, despite Atiku's campaigning, it will confirm what many already suspect: Wike is not just holding down PDP for APC. He's systematically converting opposition territory into ruling party strongholds through a combination of infrastructure delivery, political manipulation, and strategic candidate elimination.
And perhaps most impressively, in the unforgiving arena of naija-politics where most operators eventually get exposed and neutralized, Wike is doing all of this openly, without apology, and seemingly without anyone being able to stop him.
That's not just cleverness. That's mastery.
What do you think? Can Wike really deliver Abuja for APC tomorrow despite the Obi-Atiku campaign? Is his strategy of convincing PDP candidates to step down brilliant or undemocratic? And what does it say about PDP's viability in 2027 if their own candidates are following Wike's instructions to support APC? Drop your thoughts in the comments section! The results tomorrow will tell us everything!
