The Nigeria Democratic Congress has constituted a National Selection Committee to oversee the screening and selection of aspirants ahead of its forthcoming governorship and National Assembly primaries

The party disclosed this in a press statement signed by its National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, stating that the move was part of efforts to ensure transparency, internal democracy and credible candidate selection.

According to the statement, the decision was approved by the party’s National Leader following recommendations by the National Working Committee (NWC) as preparations intensify for the primaries.

The committee is expected to review and scrutinise reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and take final decisions on the screening outcomes of all aspirants seeking to contest on the party’s platform.

Former senator, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, was named chairman of the 20-member committee, while Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu will serve as secretary.

Other members include Buba Galadima, Yenusa Tanko, Udenta Udenta, Aminu Abdulsalam, and several other party stakeholders.

The party appealed for understanding and cooperation from aspirants, leaders and members, citing the tight timelines for concluding the exercise.

It explained that the process was designed to encourage consensus-building and ensure the emergence of widely acceptable candidates through what it described as a free, fair and credible mechanism.

The party further stated that only aspirants screened and cleared by both the National Screening Committee and the National Selection Committee would be permitted to purchase nomination forms.

According to the statement, where consensus arrangements fail, direct primaries will be conducted between May 28 and May 30, 2026, in line with party guidelines.

The National Selection Committee is scheduled to be formally inaugurated on Monday, May 25, 2026, after which it will immediately commence its inaugural meeting.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and inclusive selection process aimed at strengthening party unity and positioning it for electoral success in future elections.
