The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi has underscored the importance of transparency in payroll administration, noting that clarity in tax deductions and remittances helps to build trust between management and staff.

He spoke on Friday in Abuja at an in-house training workshop organised by the institution’s Bursary Department to equip staff with practical knowledge of the New Tax Act 2025 and its implications for payroll administration, Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and public sector financial management.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, public institutions have a responsibility not only to comply strictly with statutory provisions but also to ensure that their internal processes reflect accountability and fairness.

He stated that proper understanding of tax laws by staff members would reduce errors in computation, eliminate avoidable disputes, and promote confidence in the university’s financial systems.

Prof. Fawehinmi explained that as national tax reforms continue to evolve, universities must position themselves to adapt seamlessly to new requirements.

The Don noted that failure to align with updated regulations could expose institutions to sanctions, financial liabilities, and reputational risks. He therefore described the training as both preventive and strategic, aimed at strengthening institutional safeguards.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Bursary Department for initiating the workshop and encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained in their daily operations. He expressed optimism that the exercise would enhance efficiency in payroll processing and ensure that the university remains fully aligned with national fiscal policies.

The workshop, held at the Main Campus, was attended by key administrative units and representatives of labour unions to promote transparency and understanding of statutory obligations.
