Tired of counting losses from incessant incursions of cattle into their farmlands in Nasarawa State, owners of a water melon farm applied chemicals and upon further invasion, the cattle died after grazing on the crops.   

Over 20 cattle reportedly dïed after grazing on a farmer's crop field in the Gidan Gade Onda axis of Udege, Nasarawa LGA on the night of Friday July 18. Many commentators have deemed the farmers’ action as self defense, arguing that as precious as cattle is to Fulani pastoralists is how crops are to sedentary farmers.

Local traditional authorities, alongside representatives of Miyetti Allah in Nasarawa LGA, visited the scene to assess the situation. But no mention has so far been made of cattle ranching which is believed to be the permanent solution to the encroachment of farmlands by herdsmen which brings about reprisals.

The District Head, Alhaji Abdullahi Kuku urged farmers to avoid using harmful substances on their farms and also advised herders to keep their cattle and children away from farms to avoid conflicts.

Meanwhile, residents have since been fleeing the community for their lives over likely violence that the death of the livestock would cause.
