The Nigerian Governors Forum has renewed calls for the creation of state police to tackle rising insecurity across the country. Several governors argued that centralised policing limits rapid response to local threats.

They urged the National Assembly to fast track constitutional amendments that will permit states to establish and control their own police units. Supporters say decentralised policing will improve intelligence gathering and community trust.

Critics warned that state police could be abused for political control if oversight systems remain weak. They called for clear operational guidelines, independent funding structures and federal checks to prevent misuse.

The presidency under Bola Tinubu has not issued a final position but acknowledged ongoing consultations with security chiefs and legal experts. The debate is expected to shape upcoming constitutional reform discussions and influence future security policy direction.
