Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The seasoned lawmaker announced his defection on Tuesday, marking a major political realignment in Abia State and the South-East region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abaribe, a former Deputy Governor of Abia State and one of the longest-serving senators from the South-East, cited the need for a broader political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s deepening economic and governance challenges as the reason for his decision.

His move comes amid growing internal tensions within APGA and ongoing realignments among opposition figures across the country. The defection is also seen as a strategic boost for the ADC, which has recently attracted several prominent political figures seeking an alternative national platform.

Political observers believe Abaribe’s exit from APGA could significantly weaken the party’s influence in Abia South while strengthening the ADC’s foothold in the region ahead of future electoral contests.

As of the time of filing this report, APGA leadership is yet to issue an official response to the development.
