We Are in the Wrong Place" — Seun Kuti Walks Out of Peller and Jarvis' Wedding. But Is He Overrating Fela's Legacy?

"We Are in the Wrong Place" — Seun Kuti Walks Out of Peller and Jarvis' Wedding. But Is He Overrating Fela's Legacy?

Seun Kuti sparked another heated debate after reportedly leaving Peller and Jarvis' wedding in frustration over a joke by the MC suggesting that Wizkid is bigger than Fela.

According to those present, Seun reacted by saying, "We are in the wrong place," before walking out.

The moment has since divided Nigerians online.

On one side are those who believe Seun was right to defend his father's legacy. To them, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti wasn't just a musician—he was a revolutionary whose influence shaped African music, culture, and political activism in ways that transcend chart numbers or streaming records.

On the other side are people who argue that Seun takes every comparison too personally. They believe it's okay to acknowledge Wizkid's massive global success without seeing it as an attack on Fela's place in history.

The bigger question is this: Is Seun Kuti protecting history, or is he overrating Fela to the point where every comparison becomes unnecessary drama?

There's no denying that Wizkid has achieved incredible international success, selling out stadiums and taking Afrobeats to new audiences. But Fela's impact is measured differently. He created a genre, challenged governments, and inspired generations of artists—including many of today's biggest stars.

Perhaps the real issue is that Nigerians often confuse influence with popularity. One can be the most influential artist in history without being the biggest commercial star of today.

Still, was a wedding really the right place for such a debate?

What do you think? Was Seun Kuti justified in walking out, or is he overreacting whenever Fela is compared to modern artists?
