Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, has addressed the reported cases of sexual assault involving women and girls during the Ozoro festival held on March 19, 2026.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, Edafe explained that certain traditional celebrations in parts of Nigeria come with long-standing customs that restrict movement, particularly for women. According to him, in some communities, women are advised to remain indoors during specific festival periods because they are not permitted to see particular masquerades. He clarified that when such situations occur, enforcement is typically limited to instructing anyone found outside—especially women—to return indoors or stay out of sight until the procession has passed.
To illustrate his point, Edafe shared a personal experience from Asaba. He recounted how he was once stopped during a traditional event and instructed to step aside because he was not allowed to view a specific masquerade. This, he noted, reflects the cultural expectations tied to some festivals, although such traditions do not justify any form of misconduct.
Addressing the incidents reported during the Ozoro festival, Edafe confirmed that law enforcement authorities have taken action. He disclosed that 16 individuals suspected of harassing and assaulting women during the event have been arrested. The police, he emphasized, are committed to ensuring accountability and maintaining public safety, regardless of cultural context.
In his words: "Even myself In Asaba here I have been blocked before, I was told 'This masquerade you are not even supposed to see it, go and hide somewhere until the masquerade passes'"
The incident has sparked conversations about balancing cultural practices with the protection of human rights, particularly the safety and dignity of women during public events. Authorities continue to investigate the matter while reinforcing the importance of lawful conduct at all gatherings.
