FG Moves to End JSS–SSS Separation as School Dropouts Rise

The Federal Government has announced plans to discontinue the separation of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS), citing growing concerns over the number of students who fail to progress to senior secondary education.

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, described the policy as ineffective, saying it has created administrative hurdles that make the transition from JSS to SSS more difficult for millions of Nigerian students. To address the problem, the Federal Ministry of Education will present a proposal to the National Council on Education for the policy's review and possible abolition.

Beyond the policy review, the government is also moving to activate Smart Schools, Bilingual Schools and Alternative Schools nationwide, with a renewed commitment to ensuring publicly funded educational facilities are completed, equipped and put to use.

If implemented, the reform could simplify the secondary education system, reduce dropout rates and improve access to quality education for Nigerian students. The success of the initiative, however, will depend on effective implementation and sustained investment in the country's education sector.
