BEYOND THE KHAKI CONVERSATIONS:The Day After NYSC Is the Day Nobody Prepares You For

There is one part of NYSC that nobody really prepares you for.

It isn't the camp experience, the CDS meetings, or even the Passing-Out Parade. It's the morning after. The day you wake up, look at your khaki hanging in the corner, and realize there is nowhere you're expected to report. No clearance to sign. No routine. Just you, your certificate, and one question:

"What's next?" For some, a job is already waiting. For many others, it's the beginning of an uncertain journey filled with applications, rejections, and silent prayers for an opportunity. The mistake many of us make is believing that waiting is the same as moving forward. While waiting for that breakthrough, keep growing. Learn a skill, improve your CV, volunteer, build something, or take one small step every day. Progress doesn't always come with a salary—it often begins with preparation. NYSC may have ended, but your journey hasn't. The khaki was never meant to define your future. It was meant to prepare you for it.

What's one lesson from your NYSC year that you're still carrying with you today?
