When people talk about NYSC, the first things that come to mind are the khaki uniform, camp drills, and parade. But I believe NYSC is much more than that. It's about meeting people from different backgrounds, learning new cultures, and building friendships that can last a lifetime.

As meaningful as these experiences are, the scheme can do even more for today's graduates. Every corps member should leave service with practical skills that improve their chances of getting a job or starting a business. Training in digital skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship should become a core part of the programme, not just an optional activity.

Community Development Service should also focus on projects that make a lasting impact. Instead of activities that end after service, corps members should work with communities on solutions that continue to benefit people long after they leave.

Lastly, corps members deserve better welfare. Safe accommodation, timely allowances, and a smoother digital process for clearance and documentation would make the service year less stressful and more productive.

The khaki uniform may represent service, but the real success of NYSC should be measured by the lives it changes. If every corps member leaves more skilled, more confident, and better prepared for the future, then NYSC will truly remain relevant for the next generation.
