Every month, I waited for the alert.

Like every corps member, the allowance brought relief. But relief is not the same as purpose.

I kept asking myself a difficult question: What will remain after I return the khaki?

Too many young graduates complete NYSC with memories, photographs, and certificates—but without practical experience, employable skills, or financial confidence. One year passes, yet many still begin their real journey from zero.

The next generation of NYSC must become a launchpad instead of a waiting room.

Orientation camp should introduce innovation challenges where corps members solve real problems facing their host communities. Winners should receive grants and mentorship. Every corps member should complete at least one internationally recognized digital certification before passing out.

PPA postings should match graduates' fields of study and career goals through an intelligent digital system. Community Development Service should be redesigned into measurable projects with lasting impact instead of routine meetings.

Most importantly, NYSC should partner with industries to guarantee internship opportunities and direct recruitment for outstanding corps members.

Nigeria already has the talent. What we lack is a system that unlocks it.

When future generations wear the khaki, they should not count the days until POP. They should count the businesses created, lives changed, jobs generated, and communities transformed.

Because the greatest allowance NYSC can ever give is not money—it is opportunity.
