What Should the Next Generation of NYSC Look Like? Beyond the Khaki

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has played an important role in bringing young Nigerians together since it was established. It has helped graduates experience different cultures, contribute to communities, and develop a sense of national unity.

However, as the country continues to change, I believe the NYSC scheme must also change to remain relevant.

The next generation of NYSC should focus more on preparing young people for life after graduation rather than changing the NYSC khaki to an Adire attire. Many graduates complete their service year without gaining practical skills that can help them find jobs or start businesses. The scheme should offer more hands-on training in areas like technology, agriculture, digital marketing, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship. This would make the service year more meaningful and help reduce unemployment.

Another important area is the welfare of corps members. No one can give their best while worrying about safety, poor accommodation, or delayed allowances. Improving security, providing decent living conditions, and ensuring timely payment of allowances would make corps members feel respected and motivated to serve.

I also think NYSC should encourage projects that leave lasting benefits in host communities. Instead of carrying out activities that end when the service year is over, corps members should work with community leaders to solve real problems in education, healthcare, environmental sanitation, and youth development. This would create a stronger connection between corps members and the people they serve.

In my opinion, the next generation of NYSC should be more than just a compulsory one-year programme. It should become a platform that equips young Nigerians with valuable skills, creates opportunities, and inspires them to contribute positively to society. If these changes are made, NYSC will continue to unite the country while preparing graduates to build a better future for themselves and for Nigeria.
