My nysc shock during my service year
The day i met masquerade
It was my frist time going to Ubulubu community, Issele-Uku, Delta State for my primary place of assignment. I'd heard the town was calm, peaceful and full of culture
I left the camp early full of energy. The ppa was about 45mins drive from the camp and I was determined to get there before 10am
As i got to the main road leading to the community everything suddenly stopped okadas, cars even people walking, everyone just stood still, I stepped down from the okada i had boarded and asked the rider why we stop like this?
He looked at me like I'd just asked why the sky is blue, then he lowered his voice and said oga corper na festival masquerade dy outside.if you see am, e go flog you. No movement
Before i could ask again I heard it. Drums louds fast aggressive drumming that shook the ground. Then came shouting and the sound of whip cutting through the air. People started running looking for where to hide.
An elderly man grabbed my hands corper we need to run " if not e go flog you for disrespect.
We quickly ran into an uncompleted building to hide our face. After the incident, okadas and vehicles started moving. I got to my ppa by 3pm and i explained to my head of department why i was late she just laughed and said welcome to Ubulubu community next time asked about festival days before planing travelling tips
