During my stay at the Adamawa State NYSC Orientation Camp, the meal that surprised me the most was the jollof rice served during lunch. Before arriving at camp, I had heard several stories that camp food was usually tasteless and not enjoyable. Because of these comments, I expected very little from the meals provided. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted the jollof rice. It was well-cooked, flavourful, and served with a piece of chicken and a soft drink, making it one of the most satisfying meals throughout the orientation exercise.
The experience became even more memorable because it came after a stressful morning of parade drills, lectures, and other camp activities. Sitting together with fellow corps members in the dining hall created a friendly atmosphere where we laughed, shared experiences, and enjoyed the meal together. It was a moment that strengthened our bond despite coming from different parts of Nigeria.
The delicious meal completely changed my perception of camp food. It taught me not to rely on rumours or assumptions without experiencing things myself. Although not every meal served in camp was exceptional, the jollof rice remains the most memorable because it exceeded my expectations. Looking back, it is one of the highlights of my stay at the Adamawa State NYSC Orientation Camp, reminding me that even simple moments can create lasting memories.
