For many Nigerian graduates, NYSC is seen as a mandatory one-year programme. But I believe it should be much more than that. It should be the year that transforms uncertainty into opportunity and helps young people prepare for the future, not just complete a national assignment.
Today's graduates are entering a highly competitive world where a university degree alone is no longer enough. This is why NYSC should become a platform for practical learning. Every orientation camp should include hands-on training in digital skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and emerging technologies. Corps members should leave camp with skills they can immediately use to secure jobs, build businesses, or create value in their communities.
Another area that deserves attention is the posting process. Graduates should be deployed to organizations where they can apply their knowledge and gain meaningful work experience. An accountant should have the chance to work in finance, a teacher in education, and an engineer in engineering-related roles. This benefits both the corps member and the organization.
Equally important is the welfare of corps members. Safe accommodation, timely allowances, quality healthcare, and proper security are not privileges—they are necessities. When corps members feel supported, they can focus on making a real impact.
NYSC has always been a symbol of unity, but its greatest achievement should be preparing graduates for life after service. Beyond the khaki should be a generation of confident, skilled, and innovative young Nigerians who are ready to build a stronger nation. That is the future NYSC should strive to create.
