When Hope was posted to her Place of Primary Assignment, she was excited. She believed this was her chance to learn, gain experience and possibly secure a job after service.
She arrived early, took her duties seriously and tried to make herself useful. Sometimes, she even stayed beyond closing time to finish pending tasks.
Whenever her colleagues joked about her working so hard for a ₦77,000 allowance, she would smile and say, “You never know. Maybe they'll retain me after service.”
Then POP came closer.
One afternoon, she finally gathered the courage to ask her supervisor about the possibility of being retained.
His response?
"Hope, you've done well, but we don't have any vacancies at the moment."
Just like that.
No job offer. No clear next step. Just a thank-you and a handshake.
That evening, Hope sat quietly, scrolling through her phone. One coursemate had secured a job, another was preparing for postgraduate studies, while someone else had already started travelling abroad.
And there she was, wondering where to begin.
But after a few days of feeling disappointed, she made a decision. She updated her CV, contacted people she had met during service and began applying for jobs. She also included the practical experience she had gained at her PPA in her applications.
Her service year had not given her the job she hoped for, but it had given her experience, professional contacts and a better understanding of the working world.
Sometimes, the place you serve will not be the place you stay. And that's okay.
To every corps member approaching POP or already holding their discharge certificate, remember that your service year is one chapter of your life, not the final definition of your success.
Don't wait until your POP date before preparing for what comes next. Update that CV, learn a useful skill, build genuine connections and start exploring opportunities while you still can.
Your next chapter may not begin exactly where you expected, but that doesn't mean it cannot be beautiful.
📢 A little reminder from OurPalaver: Your NYSC experience counts, even if your PPA doesn't retain you.
If this story reminds you of someone preparing for life after NYSC, share it with them. Sometimes, people need encouragement more than they need another reminder that they haven't figured everything out yet.
