Being a corps member isn't just about wearing the khaki or completing your service year, it's also about gaining valuable work experience in an environment that supports your growth. Unfortunately, not every corps member enjoys that experience.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has once again emphasized the need for employers across Nigeria to improve the welfare, safety, and overall workplace experience of corps members.

At the 2026 NYSC Corps Employers' Workshop held in Umuahia, Abia State, the NYSC stressed that stronger collaboration between employers, government agencies, and host communities is essential to making the service year more rewarding.

According to the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, employers play a vital role in helping corps members turn the knowledge they gained in school into real-world experience. He reminded employers that they have responsibilities under the NYSC Act, including providing suitable accommodation (or accommodation allowance), ensuring a safe working environment, supporting transportation where necessary, granting access to healthcare, and allowing corps members to participate in Community Development Service (CDS) and official NYSC activities.

The workshop also highlighted concerns that some corps members still face poor treatment, rejection, and unfavorable working conditions at their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA). These challenges not only affect their productivity but also reduce the value of the NYSC experience.

The Abia State Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of corps members serving in the state, noting that when corps members are treated well, they are better equipped to contribute meaningfully to their workplaces and host communities.
