She Cried When She Saw Her NYSC Posting Letter. Months Later, She Didn't Want to Leave.

When Zainab opened her NYSC posting letter, the first thing she did was cry.

She had been posted to a state she had never visited, hundreds of kilometres away from her family and friends. All she could think about was how she would survive in a strange environment, away from everything familiar.

Her mother tried to console her, but Zainab had already made up her mind that this was going to be the worst year of her life.

The first few weeks were exactly what she feared. She struggled to adjust, missed home terribly and often wondered why she couldn't have been posted closer to her family.

At her PPA, she barely spoke to anyone. She would finish her duties, return to her room and spend the evening scrolling through pictures of her friends who were serving in more familiar places.

But one afternoon, everything began to change.

During a CDS meeting, she met another corps member who noticed how quiet she was. A simple conversation turned into friendship, and before long, Zainab had people she could laugh with, share her worries with and count on whenever things got difficult.

Gradually, the state she once dreaded became a place of beautiful memories. She discovered new places, learned to be independent and built friendships she never imagined she would find.

Then came the day she had been waiting for: POP.

While everyone was celebrating, Zainab found herself holding back tears. The same girl who had cried over her posting letter was now crying because she had to leave.

She had arrived believing she was going to lose a year of her life, but she was leaving with memories, lessons and friendships she would cherish forever.

Sometimes, the place you never wanted to go becomes the place you never want to leave.
