Every year, thousands of graduates wear the khaki with pride. They leave home, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and commit one year of their lives to national service.

That sacrifice deserves a programme that gives just as much in return.

The NYSC of tomorrow should focus less on routine and more on results.

Rather than treating every corps member the same, NYSC should recognize different talents and ambitions. Some graduates want careers in technology, others in education, healthcare, business, agriculture, or public service. The scheme should provide pathways that support those goals through specialized training and meaningful placements.

Entrepreneurship should become a major priority. Instead of short motivational talks, corps members should receive practical business support, mentorship, and access to funding opportunities. By the end of service, many should be ready to launch businesses that create jobs for others.

Mental health should also become part of welfare. Adjusting to a new state, workplace, and community can be emotionally challenging. Access to counselling and support services would help corps members stay healthy and productive.

Technology can also transform the entire service year. Mobile applications for reporting, clearance, CDS activities, and communication would reduce stress while improving accountability.

Most importantly, NYSC should continue promoting national unity. The friendships formed across ethnic and religious lines remain one of its greatest strengths. Those connections remind us that despite our differences, we all want a better Nigeria.

The next generation of NYSC should not simply ask graduates to serve Nigeria. It should inspire them, prepare them, and empower them to lead Nigeria into a brighter future.
