Beyond the Khaki: Let NYSC Become a Bridge Between Graduates and Small Businesses

When people talk about employment after NYSC, the conversation usually focuses on large companies. However, thousands of small businesses across Nigeria also need skilled young graduates but often don't have a way to connect with them. I believe NYSC can play an important role in bridging this gap.

Imagine a national platform where verified small businesses, social enterprises, and local manufacturers can request corps members with specific skills. Instead of viewing corps members simply as temporary staff, these businesses could become training grounds where graduates gain practical experience while helping local enterprises grow.

The programme could also encourage employers to retain outstanding corps members by offering incentives or recognition to organizations that create permanent opportunities after the service year. This approach would benefit everyone. Small businesses would gain fresh ideas and skilled manpower, while corps members would leave NYSC with stronger résumés, industry experience, and a clearer career path. National service should not only connect graduates with communities it should also connect them with meaningful opportunities that contribute to Nigeria's economic growth.
