Beyond the Khaki: Service That Heals

The khaki is not the point of NYSC. It’s what happens when we take it off at night that should matter most.

For the next generation, I want a service year built on Welfare, Security & National Unity. Orientation Camp should include counselors and peer support groups alongside drills. Corps members carry a lot of pressure and anxiety. A healthy mind serves better. We also need insurance, decent housing, and real security protocols, especially for those posted outside their state.

Community Development Service must go beyond sanitation. Let CDS teams be funded to mediate communal conflicts, run anti-drug campaigns in schools, and document stories of unity in host communities. That is how we build Nigeria from the grassroots.

For Skills & Digital Innovation , every corps member should leave camp with at least one practical skill and be linked to opportunities in their PPA.

PPA Placement & Career Development should also be intentional, matching course of study to where we can actually add value.

Beyond the khaki, let NYSC leave us with empathy, skills, and safety. If we exit service more united and more human, then we would have truly served Nigeria.
