I was in the kitchen when I started hearing voices from my neighbor's house. Within minutes, the voices grew into shouts and screams, before we could say jack utensils started flying in all directions.
I wasn't surprised because if you live in our compound, you'll know this is their normal weekend routine.
I quickly finished what I was doing in the kitchen, went to the bedroom and picked a very good spot to start my aproko. My husband wasn't home so I need to record every detail of the fight for our after dinner gist.
I had barely settled on the couch when I heard a loud bang followed by an ear deafening scream from my neighbor's wife. She rushed out of their apartment naked, safe for the white singlet and biker's shorts on her. From where I was standing, I could see blood dripping on her face from a big gash on her forehead.
Seeing how bad the wound was, I decided to step in for the first time in 2 years we've been neighbors. A decision I'll forever live to regret.
I picked up my phone to call my husband but his number wasn't reachable. I continued trying his number because I knew going out there without his consent would cause a big fight between us. My husband is a very gentle and easy going man so when it comes to fights or any trouble at all, count him out.
He picked on the third ring and I explained the situation to him. He refused at first but when I told him how much the woman had been bleeding, he accepted on the condition that I stay away from the husband and ask the woman before rendering any help.
I stepped out of my apartment, careful enough not to make noise. I beckoned on my neighbor's wife but she looked at me with disdain and hissed loudly, Omo.
I called her to come closer so that I could at least administer a first aid treatment on her wound but this woman faced me and started insulting me.
She claimed I'm offering fake sympathy, she said who asked for my help. This my neighbor's wife looked me up and down and said I looked like my husband's mother because the only thing I'm good at is eating, sleeping and going shopping.
After all the insults, I was supposed to go back into my house but no, I opened my iron gate and stepped out to talk to the husband. Truth is, I wasn't going there to ask him any questions, in fact I wasn't going there to check on him or beg him. I was going to check how badly the wife had wounded him for him not to have rushed out after her to continue the beating in the compound as usual.
As soon as I rounded the corner of my apartment to face their door, I heard a loud bang and my world became dark and void. I felt myself floating in the air and I could swear I saw my late grandmother snickering at me.
I woke up two days later in the hospital, my head heavily bandaged with a cannula in my left hand.
My husband walked in a few minutes later and explained how he met me lying unconsciously on the floor with my head covered with blood. I asked about our neighbors and he said they weren't home when he got back and he hasn't seen them since I was admitted to the hospital.
I got discharged a week later and when we got home,
our neighbors were gone.
