After a goalless first half, Josh Cullen broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, curling home a fine strike after Jaidon Anthony’s clever flick created the chance. Sunderland pressed for an equaliser but failed to make their opportunities count, with Eliezer Mayenda missing a key chance.

The game was briefly halted due to floodlight issues, but Burnley kept their composure. In the closing stages, Cullen turned provider, setting up Jaidon Anthony, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Robin Roefs to double the lead in the 88th minute.

Manager Scott Parker hailed the result as a “humongous victory,” underlining its importance after Burnley’s opening-day defeat. Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris admitted his side lacked cutting edge despite moments of promise.
