Tottenham remain resigned to losing Lucas Bergvall this summer, but only if Newcastle United remain prepared to pay close to the £60m valuation Spurs have set for the midfielder, according to Football Insider. It is a stance that has held firm since Newcastle’s opening approach, worth around £46m, saw itself rejected out of hand last month, and it leaves the Magpies with a clear but expensive choice to make before the window shuts.

The timing seems to be uncanny. Newcastle are reportedly delaying their improved bid until August 16 specifically to sidestep UEFA’s 45-day rule governing transfers between clubs that have already done business with each other, a technicality that stems directly from Sandro Tonali’s move in the opposite direction from Newcastle to Tottenham back on July 2.

It is an unusually deliberate piece of financial engineering for what amounts to a bidding war over one player, and it underlines how seriously Eddie Howe’s successor Matthias Jaissle rates Bergvall as a rebuild option in a Newcastle midfield stripped of both Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Bergvall’s own position has been consistent since he submitted a transfer request back in June, driven by the same logic that has pushed several Tottenham midfielders towards the exit this summer.

The arrivals of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes squeezed his path into the side considerably, and at 20 years old, with his development still very much in progress, regular football elsewhere is a reasonable priority even with De Zerbi personally keen to keep him. That tension between what De Zerbi wants and what Tottenham’s business office is prepared to accept is precisely why “resigned” is the right word for the club’s position. Nobody at Tottenham particularly wants this sale. Nobody is blocking it either, provided the number is right.

Whether £60m is realistic remains the open question. Newcastle have already shown they will negotiate upward once, moving from an initial enquiry to a formal £46m bid, but a jump of nearly £15m further is a significant ask even for a club with Newcastle’s resources.
