Manchester United have spent the last few seasons searching for consistency, yet one problem continues to resurface: the midfield.

This summer, several Premier League rivals have wasted no time strengthening their squads. Arsenal have continued to invest in maintaining a title-winning team, Chelsea remain aggressive in the transfer market, Manchester City consistently refresh their squad despite years of success, and Tottenham have also targeted midfield reinforcements to stay competitive.

At Old Trafford, however, the approach has been far more cautious.

The irony is hard to ignore. Midfield has arguably been Manchester United's biggest weakness in recent years. Injuries, inconsistency, an aging core, and the lack of control in big matches have repeatedly exposed the team. Even football analysts and many supporters have identified midfield as the club's top recruitment priority.

INEOS have made it clear they want to avoid the reckless spending of previous regimes. Financial discipline is important, but modern football also rewards clubs that know when to invest decisively. History shows that title contenders rarely stand still while their rivals improve.

As Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham continue to strengthen, Manchester United risk entering another season asking the same questions that should have been answered in the transfer market.

The biggest question now isn't whether United need a midfield rebuild—most fans agree they do. The real question is whether the club is acting quickly enough to close the gap.
